RETURNING THE BJCC SIDDURIM & HUMASHIM TO THE DEDICATORS   Since the prayer books and Bibles once used at BJCC are no longer in use, we would like to return them to all those who dedicated them.

Please come by to pick up the books you dedicated.

We will have the books in alphabetical order (by the last name of the dedicator)  so they should not be too difficult to recover.

Unclaimed books will be made available to any of our present MJC members, with the remainder to be given to any synagogue or havurah that could make use of them.

You can pick up the prayer books in the sanctuary through July 2008.

ISRAEL TZEDAKAH PROJECT

In celebration of Israel's 60th birthday, the Religious School children have been involved in a variety of programs monthly. On January 6, children & parents met to launch a tzedakah project in an effort to help feed hungry children in Israel. That morning, our school children decorated 300 lunch bags that will be distributed to children in Israel. In addition, to date, we have raised $4,388.00 which will help feed 121 Israeli children.

Should you wish to make a contribution before we leave, please send your donation to Midway Jewish Center. A donation of $36.00 provides a hot lunch program for one child. You are welcome to sponsor as many children as you wish. p>Our efforts to help these children will continue for the remainder of the year.

Toddah, thank you for all your help.

SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEEEE

There is a toiletry box in the lobby (hallway) of the Hebrew School for FEGS, which will go to people that are in great need. They need toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, hair brushes, shavers, conditioners, shampoos, soap, lotions, wipes... Any size would be good. Food stamps don't cover the costs of toiletries.
Your help will be greatly appreciated!

MIDWAY'S SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE
WE CARE BLANKETS is a non-for-profit organization that helps children undergoing chemotherapy by giving each child a handmade blanket made by volunteers.  The children are often cold and scared during their therapy, so these blankets not only warm them, but also serve as a comfort.  The blankets are crocheted, knitted or sewn.  Upon completion, the blankets are beautifully wrapped and delivered to one of many hospitals such as Sloan Kettering, Yale/New Haven, Schneider Children's Hospital (LIJ), Winthrop Hospital, and many others in New York City
In addition, they are brought to
New Jersey and Mass General, Dana Farber in Boston and others around the country.
How you can help:
1) By donating yarn you will be part of the program, since volunteers will craft blankets using your donations.
2) By donating funds for yarn and wrapping paper.
3) By making handmade blankets.  Blankets must be at least 30x30 inches long and wide.  The bigger, the better.  Please make your blankets with a tight stitch, so the baby or child's fingers don't fit through the holes.  If you need patterns, please let me know.  Also, If you need yarn, I have yarn that you can use.  When you are finished with your blanket just call
Linda Weiss at 516-933-8531 or e-mail Linda at LindaW418@awa-llc.com  Please contact me if you would like to make a blanket. Your help will be greatly appreciated!
I would like to give a big thank you to our Midway's We Care Blanket volunteers: Shelly Langenauer, Sandy Savino, Terry Fields and Lucy Simon. These women are all getting such joy knowing that
their blankets are warming a child and putting a smile on their face.  It also makes their families feel good knowing that a stranger reached out to make a handmade blanket for their child.  The blankets are for the child while undergoing chemo treatment and to take home and keep after they leave the hospital.  It's a great feeling to know that a baby or young child is warmed by these blankets.  Please view these beautiful blankets below that our members made.  They really did a beautiful job!!!!

SOCIAL ACTION  - MEALS ON WHEELS
PLEASE HELP DELIVER FOOD TO SENIORS IN NEED.
The "Meals on Wheels" program is the largest in Nassau County, serving more than 1,000 seniors in 55 communities annually.  They are a non for profit program, administered by the Visiting Nurse Association of Long Island, dedicated to delivering nutritious meals to the high-risk, frail, homebound elderly population over 60, and to a limited number of disabled individuals under 60.  In addition, Meals on Wheels provides counseling and nutrition education and participants are linked with other community agencies for additional services needed to maintain independence.  The meals are prepared at seven area hospitals and two catering facilities.  Low sodium, diabetic and kosher diets are available.
A relative, a friend, a health care professional or even a neighbor can make a referral for an eligible senior by contacting the Meals on Wheels office at 516-739-1292.  Eligibility requirements include being a
Nassau County resident, being over the age of 60, homebound, unable to cook or shop safely, and not receiving service from another agency where meal preparation is included in their care plan.  Persons over the age of 60 can elect to pay the full cost of the meals or pay for a part of the cost.  If you know of anyone that is in need of this service, please tell them about Meals on Wheels.
The number of elderly persons in
Nassau County is increasing.  Meals on Wheels meets the growing requests from the support of volunteers.  Meals on Wheels desperately needs volunteers to give of their time to deliver meals.  Delivery is set up fives days a week, with a limited number of weekend meals available to the most vulnerable.  Volunteers pick up hot and cold meals at the Plainview North Shore Hospital at 10:00a.m. and they are delivered shortly afterwards.  You can decide to commit to delivering food one time a week or once a month, depending on your availability.  This can be a great gift of time and very rewarding.

Your whole family can help.  Help teach your children the value of giving and being compassionate caring individuals.
If you are interested, please contact Linda Weiss at LindaW418@awa-llc.com or call Linda at 933-8531
