| Upcoming Observance |
Like the first two days of Pesah, the last two days sacred—Yom Tov, as we say of Good Days. This year, their observance begins Sunday evening with sunset, and continues through Tuesday, April 5-6, 2010. These days are made special by the lighting of Yom Tov candles, recitation of Kiddush, attendance at synagogue, the study of Torah and Yizkor, the memorial service for our departed loved ones recited on the very last day. We will study that section of the Torah which culminates in the Israelites crossing a divided Red Sea to safety. The Festival of Freedom reminds us to never see ourselves as trapped even when surrounded by the enemy and the Red Sea! |
TORAH READING
Pesah Shabbat Hol Hamo’ed— Exodus 33:12-34:26
Moses wants assurance from God that God will lead the Israelites through the wilderness. God gives him that as well as a promise that Moses will soon have a better understanding of who God is, for God will cause His goodness to pass before Moses. Moses carves two tablets of stone upon which are the Ten Commandments, thus replacing the first set which he broke. God creates a covenant with the Jewish people in which He promises to clear the land of Canaan for the Israelites. In exchange, the Israelites must remain faithful to the one God and God alone, observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, dedicate their firstborn to God, observe Shavu’ot, and refrain from boiling a kid in it’s mother milk. The latter law becomes the basis for the fundamental kosher law of never mixing meat and dairy.

DEAR CYBERAV… I’VE GOTTA QUESTION

HOW MANY GIGS IN GOD?
Dear Cyber Rav,
I have a problem with the concept of prayer to ask for something personal. Requesting a child or making someone healthy makes sense to me but anything else does not merit or warrant G-d's time and effort.
Why Bother the Big Guy!
CYBER RAV ANSWERS
Dear Why Bother the Big Guy,
I don't think, as you suggest, that all prayers are equal, and there is some merit to the idea of not mitching God with every petty need you have. On the other hand, think of the power of your computer and the speed with which it can handle all sorts of trivia. Each of our laptops today are more powerful and complicated than the computers that NASA used in landing a man on the moon. Now consider the fact that computing is basically a technology that is still in its infancy and what people will be using in fifty or thirty or even ten years from now will render our computers no more sophisticated than Model T's. And finally, think of the fact that however powerful the most powerful computer we will ever have will be, God will nevertheless be infinitely faster, brighter and more competent than that computer.
So who is to say what God might dismiss as trivial or of no importance? If our concerns, however trivial, can be addressed with tremendous speed by a computer, how much more so by the Lord of the Universe!
You keep talking to God and let God decide what is trivial.
